CHAPTER 10

Someone was calling his name. He had no idea who it was and couldn’t understand why his eyes refused to open. They were heavy, sinking down into his skull, refusing to do as he asked of them.

“Wake up, Chase, please. I need you to wake up.”

Something touched his cheek, a gentle hand brushing his skin. He tried to speak, wanted to say he was awake, that he would get up in a minute and, whoever this was, needed to stop needling him, only to realize that he wasn't in his bed. Something had broken through the unconscious state he’d been in, and now, his mind and body were trying to rouse themselves again.

“Umph.”

It was the only sound he could manage. His eyes were still closed, but he demanded they move, every bit of strength going into such a simple action. He heard a half sob, half cry of relief, and realized Veronica was beside him.

“Are you okay?”

Chase drew in a breath, pain coming to him like a crashing wave. His whole body seemed to burn with it, and it took him a few seconds to answer. “Where am I?” His throat was tight. “What happened?”

His graveled voice seemed far too loud for his ears, and he dropped his eyes closed again, shutting out the blurry vision of Veronica. The pain in his head was immense. He couldn’t remember what happened. The only thing he could think or feel was pain.

“I’m so sorry, Chase.” Veronica's voice was a whisper, but it was like a trumpet blast to him. “I know this sounds awful. You need an ambulance, but you have to get up. We have to move. We can’t stay here.”

Chase tried to say something, but the pain only intensified. Veronica had one arm around his shoulders, the other one at his chest as she murmured words of encouragement. He didn’t understand why she was whispering, but he forced himself to do what she wanted, his whole body shaking with the effort.

This isn’t me.

Being weak wasn’t a sensation he was used to or liked. He never pulled back from anything and was never held back by any threat or obstacle. Chase gritted his teeth, hating the weakness that burned through him now. Scowling hard, he set his jaw and, with Veronica’s help, managed to push himself to his knees.

“What… What happened?”

It took a few seconds for the dizziness to fade, but as he spoke, his vision cleared until he finally saw Veronica clearly. Her eyes were huge.

“I don’t understand.” He said, reading her face.

A sound seemed to come from far away, and Veronica clapped one hand to her mouth, her eyes flaring, and he realized in that instant just how much trouble he was in.

It’s no accident that I’m in serious pain and lying on the hallway floor.

“Someone else is here in your house,” she whispered.

Chase rubbed his eyes, the realization sending a wave of strength into him. “Someone’s in my house. They did this to me?”

“I guess so. We have to go.
